Surface-Mount Photo-IC for Ambient Light Sensor : TPS859
The TPS859 is an ultra-compact surface-mount photo-IC for illuminance sensors that incorporates a photodiode and current amplifier in a single chip. The TPS859 features a higher sensitivity and a reduced sensitivity variation compared to phototransistors.
Since the TPS859 has spectral sensitivity close to that of human eyes, it provides an excellent linearity output proportional to the ambient brightness. With its ultra-compact surface-mount package, the TPS859 can be used not only for large applications such as flat panel displays (backlight control) and various home appliances (power-saving control), but also for small applications such as cell phones and digital cameras (backlight control for displays). The TPS859 contributes to power saving in various applications and also improves visibility of LED displays.

Features
- Ultra-compact and light surface-mount package: 1.6 × 1.6 × 0.55 mm
- Excellent output linearity of illuminance
- High sensitivity and little fluctuation in light current:
- IL = 230 μA (typ.) @EV = 100 lx using fluorescent light
- Light current variation width: × 1.67 (when light current is specified.)
- Little temperature fluctuation
- Reduced luminous sensitivity variation across various light sources with a new filter technology:
- IL (@incandescent light) / IL (@fluorescent light) = 1.0 (typ.)
- Low supply voltage, allowing the TPS859 to be used for batter-powered equipment:
- Operating voltage = 1.8 V to 5.5 V
- RoHS-compatible
Applications
- Flat panel displays
- Cell phones
- Notebook PCs, PDAs
- Camcorders, digital cameras
- Other equipment requiring luminosity adjustment
