What types of ROM are used as built-in memory ?

Microcomputer Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) NO.EA9901401

Answer

ROM used in microcontrollers is broadly divided into two types: mask ROM and programmable ROM.
Mask ROM is factory-programmed by the device manufacturer, making it suitable for volume production.
Programmable ROM allows its contents to be programmed by the user, and thus is suitable for production of a diversified lineup of products. Programmable ROM types include OTP which can be programmed only once, and Flash memory and E2PROM which can be programmed/erased multiple times.
