Examples of Products
Examples of products in which procedures to reduce environmental impact compared to previous generations or similarly - functioned products have been employed
(1) Material and production phase
NAND-type Flash Memory
The development of NAND-type flash memory devices commonly used in SD Memory Cards and SSD devices has produced outstanding achievements in terms of increasingly finer design rules and the resulting reduction of environmental load per capacity.
The product of the year 2010 (TC58NVG6D2GTA**) boasts 2,000 times the memory capacity of TC58V32FT, our similar product of 10 years ago, while maintaining about the same size and performance, thus significantly reducing the environmental load per capacity.
(2) Use phase
Power MOSFET for quickly charging mobile devices: SSM6J212FE
This product is used for charge control of high capacity batteries used in mobile handsets, digital still cameras, game devices, etc. The power consumption of the device is reduced by 56 % from our previous models by reducing the on-resistance of the device (Note). It is well suited to the high density packaging required in mobile device applications.

- (Note) The resistance between drain and source electrodes of a conducting MOSFET is called "on resistance".
The lower the on resistance, the less the conduction loss of the MOSFET.
(3) Use phase
Mixed-Signal Controller: TMP89FH00
The TMP89FH00 has built-in analog circuits in its MCU (microcomputer unit) to make connection and control of sensors easier. For example, using the device together with human sensors, target systems can be turned on/off according to the presence of people, thereby contributing to the energy saving of the device. Also, the reduction of external components results in reduced printed circuit board area and lower costs.

Microprocessor with ARM core: TMPM330/360/390 series
In audio, video, and other consumer devices, CEC (Consumer Electronics Control, i.e., exchange of control signals between devices) and/or the reception and processing of remote control signals is often required even while the device is powered off.
While CEC or remote control reception requires the MCU (microcomputer unit) to be in normal operation mode in the case of conventional devices, this product (TMPM330/360/390 series) enables MCU processing of the same function in a low frequency operation mode (@32.768 kHz) to significantly reduce the standby power consumption.

Launch of HG3 Series SSD with Improved Energy Efficiency
In 2010, Toshiba started volume production of the HG3 series third generation SSD devices.
With the advancement of micro fabrication technologies, the HG3 series SSD, which uses NAND-type flash memory devices produced by 32 nm process technology, reduced power consumption during operation by up to approximately 17 % compared to the previous HG2 series devices that used 43 nm process technology.
Also, by improving the control method of the controller, the standby power consumption is reduced to about one third to achieve energy efficiency of 3.1 times that of the previous model.
This improvement has resulted in longer battery life for mobile PC and other portable devices thereby contributing to longer operation times for the devices.
The company will continue to use the most advanced and miniaturized NAND-type flash memory devices focusing on high performance, high capacity, and low power consumption, in order to increase energy efficiency.
