Environmental Communication Activities in Japan
Environmental communication activities developed and carried out at factories in Japan
Many Japanese sites are actively engaged with their local communities.
The Ofuna Branch of the Microelectronics Center received a three star certification for excellence in waste separation in Yokohama for their "MOTTAINAI activities", their waste separation training and other 3R efforts.
Yokkaichi Operations
The Yokkaichi Operations holds periodic meetings with local community associations to talk about our environmental preservation activities. We report on environmental measurement data for water and air quality using environmental reports issued by the Yokkaichi Operations, and we also invite them to visit our environmental facilities and explain our efforts to preserve the environment surrounding our plant.
We will continue these activities so that we can proceed with our business activities in close contact with the local community.

Oita Operations
The Oita Operations offers lessons on the environment to primary school pupils under the title of "Fun Eco Study Class", and hopes to provide an enjoyable and interesting forum for studying our environment.
In these classes, we use hands-on learning methods to explain power generation, water quality inspection, and the like, complete with quiz questions. The classes invite students to think of what we can do now and what we must do for the future in the hope of helping them to feel their environment more intimately.
We will continue these activities and hope to make some modest contribution to the future of our earth.

Kitakyushu Operations
Employees of the Kitakyushu Operations volunteered to start the "Green Eco Club" and work not only on raising environmental awareness but promote "green curtain activities" (providing natural shade for a building using climbing plants) as a means to address global warming.
Through trial and error we selected species and culturing methods, and we have harvested seeds in autumn and plan to use them for green curtains in the next year, as well as giving them to primary and junior high schools in the community, other plants and employees in order to spread our message about the benefits of green curtains.
Once again this year, vivid green leaves have not only screened the hot summer sun but helped to soothe our employees and visitors alike.
Ofuna Branch of the Microelectronics Center
The Ofuna Branch of the Microelectronics Center received three star certification for excellence in office waste separation in Yokohama from Yokohama City in FY 2010. In particular, the Center's "MOTTAINAI activities" and waste separation training were highly evaluated, and only the Ofuna Branch out of all entities ever passed this difficult certification examination at the first try. This challenge was triggered by the words of a staff member who was troubled by the poor waste separation being carried out: "Instead of simply pushing staff to follow the separation rules, can't we heighten everyone's motivation to perform voluntary separation?" This was our starting point, and when we set the goal of certification for the office, the minds of the employees of Toshiba Group companies, staff in the cafeteria and staff of the cleaning company were united, creating a formidable force and enabling us to achieve our target in a short period. It is necessary to pass an examination every year for this certification, and we made it our goal to continue promoting our activities and receiving this certification in the future.
- Upside: The certification ceremony (23 entities among about 2,600 entries were certified. General Manager Ooto is third from the right)
Bottom: Waste separation training at the cafeteria (training was carried out with waste from each worksite, and was given not only to the employees of Toshiba but to all relevant on-site personnel)
