Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

A tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is an electronic system for monitoring the air pressure inside the tires of an automobile. It consists of multiple radio transmitters with a sensor module installed within tire cavities and a chassis-mounted radio receiver. The use of a TPMS was mandated in the U.S. in 2007, and a TPMS will be mandatory on all new automobiles to be sold in the EU after November 2012. TPMS legislation is also being reviewed in Japan and China. Therefore, the TPMS market is expected to expand in the near future.

Lately, the TPMS receiver functions are being integrated into a remote keyless entry (RKE) receiver, which is more prevalent in automobiles. As a result, a TPMS receiver must be installed within the limited confines of a vehicle chassis where radio signals can be stably received from any direction, irrespective of vehicle models and body sizes. Today's automobiles have many electronic noise sources due to the increased use of electronic control systems such as those for electric vehicles. Thus, RF ICs with excellent interference performance will be beneficial.

This figure provides an outline of a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and a remote keyless entry (RKE) system.
